Cherie Goff | Sustainable Architect
As a custom home architect in Colorado with over 30 years of experience designing award winning homes, I founded cgmodern Architecture (Colorado Green Modern Architecture) to create regional modern designs that are environmentally responsible and deeply connected to nature.
As a Colorado native, I draw inspiration from the outdoors—hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and visiting hot springs—as well as from my travels, including a year living in Denmark. The clean, minimalist architecture of Northern Europe, especially Iceland’s natural hot springs, has shaped my approach to creating serene spaces that connect people with the landscape.
I strongly believe that well-designed homes can elevate daily life, and having designed my own home, I have firsthand experience of this. Each home should meet our complex emotional needs. From functional spaces that bring families together to quiet nooks for reflection, a home should be a retreat—a place to recharge, connect, and enjoy the restorative power of nature.
As a sustainable architect and LEED Green Associate, I focus on designing energy-efficient, site-sensitive buildings that use resources wisely. I am a registered architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects. My projects have been recognized by the AIA and the American Society of Interior Designers, and my work has been featured in Sunset Magazine, Dwell+, Modern in Denver, and 5280 Home. In 2025, cgmodern was included in Forbes Americas Top 200 Residential Architects. My design process and philosophy have been highlighted in Boulder Lifestyle’s “Crafting a New Narrative,” and I was named one of 2020’s Brilliant Minds Shaping the Way Denverites Live by 5280 Home.
Are you looking to build a new home in Boulder, Denver or in the Colorado Mountains? I’d love to connect and collaborate with you to create a thoughtful, custom home that reflects your lifestyle and values—a home that is truly yours.
Our architecture & interior design process
At cgmodern architecture, designing your home is more than a project—it’s a collaborative journey. From the first spark of an idea to the final details, we guide you every step of the way, ensuring every decision aligns with your vision and lifestyle.
-
We begin by understanding you and your site. What are your goals? How do you want to live? Together, we explore possibilities and uncover the site’s potential by:
Creating a project program that defines your lifestyle, priorities and goals
Reviewing zoning, codes, and site opportunities through preliminary diagrams
Coordinating initial surveys and soil testing with engineers
-
Here, your new home begins to take shape. We explore multiple plans and 3D models to identify the design approach that best supports your goals and expands the project’s potential, with a focus on:
Form: Crafting building shapes that respond to the site
Context: Maximizing views, sunlight, and privacy for indoor–outdoor living
Flow: Ensuring spaces connect naturally and function effortlessly
Experience: Creating rooms and moments that feel personal and memorable
-
At the end of schematic design, we help you select a contractor to join the project and collaborate with us throughout the build. They provide valuable pricing insights, construction expertise, and guidance to inform decisions as the project moves forward.
-
We refine every detail of your home while coordinating with consultants such as structural engineers, landscape architects, and mechanical contractors. In this phase we focus on these aspects of the design with you:
Fine-tuning and enhancing aesthetics inside and out, including kitchen and bathroom layouts, built-ins, and preliminary material palettes
Selecting mechanical systems
Developing lighting design
Selection of window/door manufacture
-
We bring every detail together in a comprehensive set of drawings that guide the build. While we're working on the technical drawings, we also fine-tune the following design elements with you:
Finalizing materials and finishes—flooring, tile, cabinets, exterior materials, and more
Selection of appliances, hardware, decorative lights
-
To streamline the permitting process, we submit your permit drawings while continuing to refine interiors and construction details during the approval period. These drawings also allow contractors to prepare final bids and pricing.
-
Construction is an exciting next step, and our collaboration continues on-site to ensure your home is built as envisioned:
Meeting regularly with the contractor
Reviewing shop drawings and coordinating subcontractors
Fine-tuning design details and finalizing materials
